My Story
Dr. Joseph Kurtz completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon, and obtained his medical degree at A.T. Still University of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona. Dr. Kurtz connected with the osteopathic philosophy’s focus on the importance of mental, physical and spiritual health, and once exposed to psychiatry, he knew it was a natural fit.
Dr. Kurtz completed his residency in psychiatry at Creighton University - School of Medicine in Phoenix, Arizona, affiliated with Valleywise Health, and trained within the nearly 400-bed inpatient psychiatric hospital system. During his residency training, he completed clerkships in emergency medicine and internal medicine within Valleywise Health. His training also includes clerkships in neurology at the nationally renowned Barrow Neurological Institute. As a part of his psychiatric training, he worked in a variety of settings including Valleywise Health's three large inpatient facilities, Banner Alzheimer's Institute, Mayo Clinic, VA Hospital, Arizona State Hospital, St. Joesph's Hospital, and the St. Vincent De Paul Clinic. Dr. Kurtz also carried a large panel of outpatients within Valleywise Health's Outpatient Resident Clinic.
During his final year of training, Dr. Kurtz was selected to lead his residency program as Chief Resident. He enjoyed working collaboratively with hospital leadership in quality improvement and advancing aspects of training within the program. Dr. Kurtz believes that good medicine is based in good science, is inquiry driven, and open to new theories and ideas. He enjoys balancing his passion for clinical work with his drive to improve the quality of the outpatient mental health experience. Dr. Kurtz strives to give everyone access to cutting-edge and evidence-based treatment options.
Dr. Kurtz believes that success is intentional, and is passionate about helping others overcome obstacles to reach their goals and evolve into the best version of themselves. He received training in multiple therapeutic modalities but developed a particular interest in psychodynamic psychotherapy, focusing on the psychological roots of emotional suffering and finding healing through a deeper understanding of the self.
Dr. Kurtz is a proud Colorado native. In his free time you'll catch him cheering on Colorado sports teams, working on his golf swing, traveling with his wife, or playing fetch with his dogs Oliver and Lucy.
